9/27/09 OVERVIEW OF ROMANS

QUICK OVERVIEW OF ROMANS
Overview and review of Romans.

Paul wrote to Christians at Rome, addressing both the Jews and Gentiles.

Two main parts,
Doctrinal (1-11) and Practical (12-16).

Four doctrines
Sin 1:18-3:20,
Justification 3:21-5:21,
Sanctification 6-8,
Election 9-11.

The "Elect" are the "Chosen."
In the Bible, the word, "Elect" is used in two ways.
1. Individuals, and 2. Nations or a People.

In Romans 9-11 the election of Israel was terminated and the election of the Gentiles through the Church was initiated. Though Paul speaks in reference to specific persons, he is explaining the cutting off of Israel and the grafting in of the Gentiles. This is clearly seen in the last part of Romans 9 (vss 23-33). Jacob represents the elect and Essau represents those that are cut off.

After the Doctrinal section (1-11), Paul gives instruction for Practical Christianity (12-15), including our relationship with God, believers, our church, sinners, the State.
Our relationship with God (total commitment) 12:1-2.
Our relationship with ourselves (humility) 12:3

Our relationship with other believers.
All members of one body 12:4.
Serving each other with different gifts 12:5-8.
Interaction with others (believers, sinners) 12:9-21.

Relationship with the State 13:1-7.

Pure love and the moral law of God 13:8-10.

Evangelism and Personal righteousness 13:11-14.
Ceremony and weaker brothers 14:1-15:12.
