I have been thinking about the problem of perfecting a local congregation in these times. It should be one of the pastor's objectives.
PROBLEMS
Self Willed
Most people in our society have not been exposed to the Biblical view of yielding to loving, wise, pastoral authority. We live in a self willed society.
Church Vagabonds
Also, most people hop from church to church, missing the advantage of a planned and thorough training and discipling experience.
Short Time
Short Time
There is so much for people to learn and so little time to teach them. People don't spend personal time in study and they don't want to spend time in training classes. Our society wants "sound bite theology" and "one touch maturity."
Few Shepherds
Few Shepherds
An added problem is that there are so few pastors who are equipped spiritually, mentally, educationally or philosophically to perfect their people. The lack of a vision for perfecting the saints and the time demands on the modern parishioner makes perfecting nearly impossible.
Colossians 1:28-29
(28) Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
(29) Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.
